What to Expect on an Offshore Fishing Charter
Here’s a breakdown of what happens from start to finish on a typical offshore trip.
1. Early Morning Departure
Most charters leave around 7:00 AM, depending on the marina and conditions. The crew will greet you, introduce the boat, and prepare the gear.
2. The Run to Offshore Grounds
Travel time varies based on the captain’s game plan:
-
Inshore edge fishing: 15–20 minutes
-
Moderate offshore grounds: 30–45 minutes
-
Deep offshore marlin territory: 45–70 minutes
During the ride, you may spot dolphins, turtles, or even whales (in season).
3. Setting the Spread
Once the boat reaches the fishing grounds, the crew sets up trolling lines with a variety of lures, teasers, and baits designed to attract:
-
Marlin
-
Sailfish
-
Mahi
-
Tuna
-
Wahoo
Deep sea trolling is the most common method used offshore in Papagayo.
4. Hookup & Fight
When a fish strikes, the excitement begins! The rod is handed to you and the crew assists you through the fight.
Expect:
-
Hard runs
-
Jumping fish (sailfish, mahi)
-
Long, slow battles (marlin, big tuna)
-
Non-stop action (tuna schools)
Battles can last anywhere from a few minutes to over an hour depending on species and size.
5. Onboard Amenities
Most offshore boats in Papagayo include:
-
Shaded areas or cabin
-
Restroom
-
Ice and bottled water
-
All rods, reels, tackle & bait
-
Professional captain and mate
Premium boats may offer lunch, drinks, and upgraded gear.
6. Returning to Shore
After several hours trolling offshore, the boat returns to the nearest beach or marina. If you caught edible fish like mahi-mahi, tuna, or snapper, the crew will clean and fillet them for you.
Many local restaurants will also cook your fresh catch.
